Graphic Design - Your Corporate Identity

By: Franco De Bonis

These days companies spend a great deal on brand awareness and promotion campaigns. Large companies can afford to allocate huge funds for conducting effective marketing campaigns. They have the necessary infrastructure to hire the best in the field of marketing and advertising. However, small companies suffer from a lack of funds and expertise.

Too many times small to medium sized companies suffer from the lack of a cohesive brand identity. Often every piece of marketing literature created looks different, with company names written in different styles and colours, brochures, leaflets and websites that don’t look like each other and even logos that look completely different from brochure to leaflet to website.

These may seem like small details, but all these small details combined are your corporate identity and having a cohesive identity delivers a message of professionalism and care.

The quality of the presentation is also critical, after all you could have a fully defined identity where every element is the same no matter where it’s used, but if it looks like a six-year old designed it, you’re still not going to get the business. One look at a poorly designed brochure or website and most potential customers immediately switch off and look elsewhere.

Finally, design is not just about how something looks. Before pen meets paper, so to speak, there are actually three questions that need to be answered:

Requirements
What do you want to achieve and who is going to see it?

Design
What do you want it to look like?

Implementation
How are you going to distribute it? Are you going to combine it with a telephone call?
By answering these questions you will identify the type of marketing materials you need as well as the physical size and quality of paper used, etc.

Seek Professional Help!

There are many graphic design companies that offer various services, such as logo, brochure, leaflet and website design, but not all of them have the expertise to deliver a professional result. When you seek out a graphic designer for a project there are a number of things you need to look for:

Is the company purely a graphic design company or do they provide broader marketing services?
Companies that provide broader services can bring general marketing expertise into your project to ensure that all your business marketing elements tie-up.

Are they the cheapest or nearly the cheapest quote you have received?
Being the most cost-effective quote is not a bad thing, frankly every company should strive to deliver the best value to their customers, but alarm bells should ring if you have quotes from a number of companies quoting you €2,000 and the company you want to use is quoting you €500!

Look at their portfolio of projects.
Review their portfolio, but check it carefully. Don’t just look at individual elements, but instead ask to see some projects where they have created multiple elements for a customer. Do those elements tie together in a cohesive way or do they all look a little different from each other?

Phone them and talk to them yourself, rather than communicating through email.
Do they sound confident? Can they explain what they think you need in layman’s terms or are they just trying to baffle you? Also ask them to provide some information on why they are different from other graphic design companies.
