Free web flash templatesSome Tips on Domain Name Registration
If you would like to build a new website, picking a name for it should be one of your first tasks. The name of your site is also known as your domain name. Step one in choosing a domain name is finding one that matches the theme of your business. You will not wish to have a site named plumbers-R-us.com if you're not a plumber! (You can visit my website for good domain name ideas.)
Try to stay away from very long domain names; you don't want to make people type in an incredibly long name just to gain access to your website. Think of it this way: the more complicated something is, the more ways it can get screwed up. The more characters in your domain name, the more likely it is that somebody will misspell it while they're typing it into their browser.
And the possibility of misspelling your domain name brings us to another issue: some names sound extremely similar. Once you choose your domain name, you might also want to buy some names that sound quite similar. For example, if your online jewelry company is called 'Jay Jewelry', you'll definitely want to buy JayJewelry.com, but you also might want JJewelry.com and possibly JayJewels.com.
And here's an interesting little side note: many giant firms own domain names that'd be considered insulting to their business. An example of this might be BankofAmericaSucks.com.
The .com domain name extension is the most popular of all, but other top level domains are available and they may be cheaper. For example, .net and .org are also used frequently. And then there are the domains that are tied to specific nations. Most of them are quite obvious: .au is for Australia, .uk is for the United Kingdom, .ca is for Canada, and so on. Certain domain extensions may not be used by private individuals. For instance, .gov is restricted to US government websites, and .edu is used by educational establishments.
It's also important to shoot for something unique when you are selecting a domain name. If you select a name that is too much like the domain of a different company, you are running the risk that people will accidentally type in that other company's name instead of your name. That other company may be one of your competitors. You can check on this by entering the name in a search engine. If you find a domain name you like, go on and snag it and get it registered, even if your website isn't ready yet. Some estimates claim that 97% of all the words in the English language have already been used.
There are more than 31 decillion domain names available, if you take into account all numbers, symbols and English letters. Unfortunately, a name that is gibberish will not be popular. Therefore, look for a domain name fast, and when you find it, register it quickly! The registration fee for a new domain name is reasonable, and a .com name will only cost $30 a year. If you decide to not use the name, it is usually possible to sell it in the future. Popular domain names can be sold for tremendous sums. For example, business.com sold for $7 million not long ago!
