In order to become an effective leader you have to know how to include the people around you in the decision making process. Being able to see the potential in others is essential in helping others, as well as yourself. It's important to be able to bring people up when you are a leader. You can do this when you lead with compassion and insight. Remember, a leader's job is to think about those in his/her sphere.
Make sure your goals are clear. When you have clear goals, you'll be able to formulate a clear action plan that will bring you closer to your ultimate goal. Remember, the most effective way to be a leader is to live and lead by example. People are not likely to listen to you if you don't live by the policies you want to implement.
Keep a positive attitude. It's hard to move forward if you're a negative person. In addition to being unable to move forward, people really don't like negativity. People often gravitate toward individuals who have a positive outlook on life and situations in general. When you remain positive, you'll also attract people into your sphere with a similar attitude.

This means you're able to clearly communicate your goals, intentions, skills and vision for whatever group of people you are trying to lead.
