The Royal Family's Love Affur

Everyone who's anyone will be at the upcoming wedding of the century, and the question on everyone's lips seems to be just what will they all be wearing?

On the 19th April 2011 Kate Middleton will walk down the aisle in a dress that has caused quite a stir already, as many people speculate as to whom she will choose to design the piece she'll be wearing when she weds the Prince in London. Sarah Burton, protg of the late great Alexander McQueen is looking the most likely candidate, but as the big day draws nearer the debate rages on. An official statement released said that the future princess, long admired for her fashion sense, wished to keep the designer a secret until the wedding day came.

The wedding dress isn't the only item of clothing that people are talking about, however. The press are eagerly anticipating what Kate's future in-laws will be wearing too, after a recent yuletide family church service at Sandringham, Norfolk. The Queen looked utterly resplendent for her annual message to the nation at Christmas, wearing a gorgeous fur trimmed coat and matching fox fur Russian cossack-style hat. Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall took her cue form her mother-in-law and wore a gorgeous Russian style fur hat, which was said to be crafted from her own mother's vintage coat by Philip Treacy, while the young Princess Eugenie represented her demographic's love for fur with a fur trimmed trilby.

Animal rights activists may berate the Royals for their "cruel" choice of clothing, but the International Fur Trade Federation (IFTF) commended their right to choose at such a public event in a statement that was released in response: "The British Queen and her relatives chose to wear fur in icy temperatures at a traditional annual event which the world's media cover extensively. It's a matter of freedom of choice to wear fur and in doing so the Queen has admirably demonstrated."

The debates over old versus new and real versus faux will no doubt never go away, and the Royal Family certainly has a long history with regards to the real thing. After all, it was the luxurious pieces used as official robes for the State that gave fur its regal associations, with trims crafted from ermine (a stoat's Winter coat). The original Coronation Crown, created in 1661 for King Charles II, incorporated the same precious fur and is still used and held in high regard today.

Fur is still extremely popular today, with over 400 designers catering to the demand in their collections for this Autumn/Winter season which include elegant, glamourous designs which have seemingly effortlessly filtered through to the high street. So, as April approaches and we all hope that the showers hold off, the fashion industry worldwide is predicting a right Royal fur turnout.
